We use plastic every single day – from the bottles we drink out of to the packaging for our food. While we know plastic is bad for the planet, a groundbreaking new study has used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to show exactly how tiny, invisible bits of plastic might be making ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease worse.
The research, published in June, explains the biological “manual” of how PET microplastics (the kind found in clear plastic bottles) interact with our gut cells to cause inflammation.
What the Research Discovered
Instead of a traditional clinical trial with patients in a hospital, this was a high-tech “detective” study. Scientists used machine learning and a technique called molecular docking (a way of using computers to see how two molecules fit together like a lock and key) to study how these plastic bits behave inside the body.
The study found:
- The “Sticky” Problem: Microplastics made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET-MPs) aren’t just passing through us. The computer simulations showed they actually “dock” onto specific proteins in our gut.
- Triggering the Alarm: When these plastic bits stick to these proteins, they “switch on” inflammatory genes like TNF, IL6, and IL1B. These are the same “alarm bells” that cause a flare-up in IBD patients.
- Intestinal Toxicity: The research mapped out a molecular network showing that these plastics interfere with how our cells repair themselves, essentially keeping the gut in a state of “toxic” stress.

For many people living with IBD, the biggest question is “Why did this happen to me?” Often, we look at our diet or our stress levels, but this research suggests our environment could play a much bigger role than we thought.
- A New Explanation for Flares: This study provides a scientific reason why someone might have a flare even when they are “doing everything right” with their diet and medicine. If our environment is full of these micro-triggers, it adds an extra layer of challenge to staying in remission.

- Future Targets: Now that AI has identified the specific proteins these plastics “stick” to, scientists can work on finding treatments or protective “coatings” for the gut that stop the plastic from docking in the first place.
While this was a computer-based and laboratory study rather than a trial involving thousands of people, it used massive databases of IBD genetic information to ensure the findings were relevant to real human biology.
