AI and Your Gut Bugs: The New Project Personalising IBD Care

Scientists have launched a massive new research project called MikrobiomProCheck to solve one of the biggest mysteries for people living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): why do treatments work for some people but not others?. By using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to map the trillions of tiny organisms in your digestive system, researchers hope to create a future where your treatment is as unique as your own thumbprint.

What is the MikrobiomProCheck Project?

This project is a huge team effort involving several top universities and hospitals in Germany, funded with 3.4 million Euros. The researchers are looking at the gut microbiome, which is the collection of bacteria, viruses, and fungi that live inside you.

The goal is to turn “samples into data”. Scientists are taking stool samples and using high-tech computers to find patterns that tell them how a person’s disease is likely to progress and which medications will be the most effective for them.

Study Scale and Duration

This is a medium-scale clinical study with a very detailed focus on different age groups. The project is tracking:

  • 100 adult patients with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis.
  • 10 to 20 young patients between the ages of 6 and 17.
  • An equal number of healthy volunteers to act as a comparison group.

By looking at children and teenagers, the team hopes to understand the very earliest changes that happen in the gut before IBD becomes severe. The project involves collecting samples at several different points in time to see how the gut changes during flares and remission.

How does the technology work?

The researchers are using two main “super-tools” to understand your gut:

  1. Metagenomic Sequencing: Instead of just looking for a few well-known bacteria, this technology reads the DNA of every single microbe in a sample. It is like taking a high-definition census of a whole city to see who lives there and what jobs they are doing.
  2. AI and the Cloud: The gut microbiome is so complex that it creates more data than a human brain could ever process. The researchers use Artificial Intelligence and a specialised digital network called the de.NBI Cloud to sort through millions of bits of information to find the “hidden signals” of IBD.
