If you have ever tried taking a probiotic supplement for your inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), you might have been disappointed when it didn’t seem to do anything. Scientists know why: your gut is a crowded, busy place, and new “good bugs” often struggle to find a home.
Now, biomedical engineers at Duke University have used robots and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to solve this problem. Their research, published in July 2026, reveals a way to design “dream teams” of bacteria and the specific food they need to thrive inside you.
The Challenge of the Crowded Gut

The robots tested combinations of 15 different gut species and 6 types of dietary fibre.
- The Dream Team: The AI discovered that a specific fibre called inulin, when paired with two “inulin-hungry” bacteria (Bacteroides uniformis and Anaerostipes caccae), worked perfectly with a third species (Prevotella copri) to produce a healthy chemical called butyrate.
- A Consistent Result: This combination worked reliably no matter what other “bad” factors were added, meaning it could be a powerful tool for a wide range of people.
Study Scale and Details
This was a proof-of-concept laboratory study. While it did not involve human patients yet, the robots performed thousands of parallel experiments in five massive batches. This allowed the team to build a massive amount of data in a very short time. The researchers are now moving to the next stage: testing this “dream team” in mice with IBD, and the early results look very promising.
